This is the front of a silver medal of the Edinburgh Amphitheatre. Dated 1790 the medal, which may also have been a badge or an entry pass, belonged to James Dewer of Vogrie.
The front is inscribed, 'Edinburgh Amphitheatre 1790'.
By 1790, the theatre contained a resident orchestra and provided a means for the music-loving upper classes of Edinburgh to socialise.
