Cross slab
Add to album

This cross slab was found at the old parish church at Reay in Caithness, reused in the south wall of the church. All four sides of the monolith were carved sometime between 800 and 1000.

This picture shows the back of the monolith. It is decorated with a scene carved in relief. At the top is a large stag above a panel of interlace. The stone is broken off at the bottom.

During this period northern Caithness was settled by the Scandinavians, though how extensively is unclear. At Reay pagan Viking burials dating to the 10th century were found. This stone, however, is firmly in the Pictish Christian tradition.
