This iron buckle was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It was used to fasten wide straps or girths on a harness between 140 and 180 AD.

A range of harness equipment has been found at Newstead, including buckles, strap fasteners, terminals, junctions and mounts. Some are simple, for everyday use, and others more ornate, for ceremonial occasions.
