From Middlebie, Dumfriesshire
This enamelled bronze strap junction was found at Middlebie in Dumfriesshire. It was part of a hoard of 28 items, mainly objects for use on horse harnesses, deposited sometime in the first two centuries AD.
The elaborate strap junction is cruciform in shape. It is ornamented with flowers, detailed in enamel. The strap junction is in very good condition, although no original enamel remains.
Leather on harnesses rarely survives, but the metal fittings and ornaments are often preserved. Strap junctions come in many forms, some quite elaborate and decorative, as in this example.
