from Dunfermline Abbey, Fife
This carved alabaster tomb fragment is from the tomb of King Robert I, 'The Bruce' in Dunfermline Abbey in Fife. The fragment dates from the early 14th century.
The tomb was decorated with gold leaf. Traces of gilding still remain on some fragments.
The tomb was carved in Paris by Thomas of Chartes from alabaster brought from England. Long before Robert the Bruce's grave was identified in the abbey in 1821, the tomb had disappeared.
