These two gas lamps for standing on a mantelpiece date from the early 20th century. They came from the first floor sitting-room of a house in Cobden Crescent in Edinburgh.

The lamps have flattened dome open shades with etched acid decoration. The baluster-shaped cut glass pendants are designed so that the movement of air from the fireplace would have caused them to knock gently against each other, producing a tinkling sound.
