Suit, by Montague Burton

This man's dark brown woollen suit was made around 1950 by the firm of Montague Burton in London. It consists of a jacket, trousers and waistcoat and is an example of a demob suit - a suit provided for a soldier who was demobilised after the World War II.

The woollen cloth has a pattern of fine stripes in red and rust. The double breasted jacket shows the typical wide lapels of the 1930s and 1940s. The waistcoat is single-breasted and the trousers are fairly wide with small turn-ups.

Men's clothes in the post-World War II period underwent changes but at a much less rapid rate than those of women. Unlike in previous centuries, men no longer thought of themselves as influenced by fashion. Some men bought only one suit or overcoat which would last for life and only be brought out at weddings and funerals.
