Photograph, of Fair Isle knitting

This photograph of Fair Isle knitting was produced in 2000, and illustrates the patterned native knitwear of Shetland.

The photograph shows a piece of traditional Fair Isle knitwear knitted in yellow, red and blue yarn.

Shetland is the last region in Scotland where craftspeople continue to practise the regional variation of their craft, hand-knitting, on a commercial scale. Good hand-knitters in Fair Isle are in great demand, and are courted by knitwear manufacturers. Wool and patterns are delivered to the knitter, and completed garments collected and dressed. The knitters use traditional patterns because they are familiar and can be knitted at high speed.
