Shetland is the last region in Scotland where craftspeople continue to practise the regional variation of their craft, hand-knitting, on a commercial scale. Good hand-knitters in Fair Isle are in great demand, and are courted by knitwear manufacturers. Wool and patterns are delivered to the knitter, and completed garments collected and dressed. The knitters use traditional patterns because they are familiar and can be knitted at high speed.
