RecordNailsfrom Newstead, Roxburghshire
NailsThese iron nails were found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They were used between 80 and 180 AD. Both nails are square-sectioned. Both have been bent over, one ending in a curved loop, the other in a squared-off loop. The Roman army needed blacksmiths to make iron tyres, fittings, and nails, as well as to repair weapons. A number of tools used in the smiddy have been found in the Roman forts, as well as a wide range of objects produced by the blacksmiths.
