The grave of a soldier's childPhotograph showing the gravestone, probably in southern England, of a soldier's infant son, 1895. The inscription reads 'In Loving Memory of Charles Matthew, the dearly loved child of Sergt. Charles and Julia Dickens, Royal Scots Greys, who died August 7th 1895, aged 3 months. Jesus called our little child unto Him.' Although life in the army abroad was perilous for the soldier, death was no stranger at home where deaths during childbirth and infancy were common. Gravestones can be useful sources for historical and genealogical information. Record detailsTo search on related items, click any linked text below.
