Stone ball or possibly a missile
Add to album

This plain stone ball was found at Kingoldrum in Angus. If used as a hammerstone or rubbing stone, it could date any time between 8000 BC and 1000 AD. If used as a missile, it probably dates from the 15th or 16th century.

The stone ball is slightly irregular in shape and is pocked all over.

Carved stone balls without any decoration are difficult to date or to be certain of their function. Some were used as missiles, while others were used as rubbers or hammerstones.
