This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1876, the plate illustrates fancy dress outfits for two women and a young girl. It is signed, 'D' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'.
The woman on the left has a dress decorated with stars and moons and signs of the zodiac. A bird is perched on top of her headdress and there are gold coins hanging over her forehead and around her neck.
Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was the second daughter of Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
