Add to album

This powder horn is said to have belonged to Sir George MacKenzie of Tarbet. It dates from around 1660.

The horn is engraved on this side with interlaced work.

Powder horns were fashioned from cow's horns softened in boiling oil and flattened before being carved. They were plugged at the wider end, and the stopper at the narrow end was often used to measure the correct quantity of gunpowder.
