This 19th century glass-mounted photograph shows the crowds at Portobello beach and promenade, now part of Edinburgh.

On the left hand side of the photograph are a number of horse-drawn 'bathing machines'.

Portobello was originally a seaside village outside Edinburgh, but gradually became absorbed into the city. It has been a popular day trip out since the 19th century, especially after cheap public transport made it easily accessible. The pier was built in 1871. It had fun activities for day trippers, as well as providing a port of call for excursion steamers. It was pulled down in 1917.
