Plate (detail)This detail shows two marks of the Glasgow potters, J. & M.P. Bell & Company. One mark is transfer-printed and the other is one of Bell's impressed trademarks. They are on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware plate which dates from between 1842 and 1880. There were many variations in Bell's marks. The transfer-printed mark consists of a bird with outstretched wings sitting on top of a scroll which contains the pattern name 'Triumphal Car'. Underneath are the company initials, 'J. & M.P.B & Co.' This was one of Bell's most popular and enduring patterns and was made in a number of different versions.
