Add to albumThis birth registration and certificate of baptism, issued by the Free Mariners' Church in Leith, refers to John McKenzie, born on the 29th January 1843 and baptised on the 9th March 1843.
John McKenzie's parents lived at 10 Shore, South Leith. His father, also called John, was a lighthouse keeper.
The registration of births, marriages and deaths did not become compulsory until 1855. Thereafter, local authorities, rather than the churches, recorded them so as to monitor population change.
