Knitting - Sanquhar patterns

This strip of material is knitted in the Sanquhar style.

This strip knitted in black and white wool in the geometric style known as Sanquhar knitting demonstrates a number of Sanquhar patterns, including: Drum, Shepherd's Plaid, Glendyne, Midge and Flea and Rose.

There are about a dozen named traditional patterns in Sanquhar knitting. Some of the patterns have been named after people. Visits to the Royal Burgh of Sanquhar by dignitaries and royalty have all been commemorated by the naming of a pattern or the presentation of a pair of gloves. The 'Glendyne' pattern was knitted in 1922 by Jessie Wilson for Robert Nivison who took the title Lord Glendyne of Sanquhar when elected to peerage.
