Photograph, of Harris tweedThis photograph shows a length of traditional hand-spun Harris tweed in 1999. The photograph shows a ream of Harris tweed lying on a workshop table, together with scissors and a measuring rule. Harris is famous for the export of tweed. To qualify as Harris tweed, the cloth must bear the orb trademark of the Harris Tweed Association and be made in the Outer Hebrides from virgin Scottish wool, woven on handlooms in the weavers' own homes. The weaving of tweed was originally a domestic activity carried out by women, but developed into a full-time specialist male occupation.
