Lamp
Add to album

This steatite lamp was found at Culsalmond in Aberdeenshire. It was used sometime between 200 BC and 200 AD.

The cup-shaped lamp has a perforated handle. It is decorated below the rim with squares in relief, and has similar grooving on the top of the handle.

Steatite was an ideal stone for making lamps. It was easy to carve, and did not crack with heat. The lamp would have been filled with oil on which a wick floated.
