Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1879, the plate illustrates two day dresses. It is signed, 'Réville' and 'I. Desgrange'. Both women are wearing straw hats and carrying parasols. Their dresses reflect the current popular fashion for tied-back skirts, high necklines, pleated trimmings and demi-trains. In the 1870-80s, parasols were elaborately decorated with embroidery, lace, flowers, ribbons and tassels. The stick and handle were often carved, with bows attached.
