Fashion plate, from Le Petit Courrier des DamesThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from Le Petit Courrier des Dames, a weekly fashion magazine published in Paris. The plate is one of a series entitled, 'Modes de Paris' and illustrates menswear. Engraved by Damours, the plate is dated 31 August, 1836. Both men are wearing frock coats, trousers and waistcoats all made out of different materials. The silk or velvet waistcoat with embroidery remained fashionable until about 1850. Many of the plates issued by Le Petit Courrier des Dames were for male fashion. In the 19th century, young men who followed fashion and indulged themselves in more outrageous clothes were known as 'dandies' or 'swells'.
