Coin (reverse), minted for Sextus Pompeius by Quintus Nasidius

This silver coin was minted for Sextus Pompeius by Quintus Nasidius in 44 or 43 BC. It is a type called a denarius, the most common Roman silver coin. It was struck somewhere during the campaigns of Sextus Pompey. This picture shows the reverse.

The reverse depicts a ship with a sail, rowers, pilot and steersman. The legend 'Q.NASIDIV' identifies the moneyer, who was a military commander in his own right, fighting on the Pompeian side. The design refers to the fleet sailing to take over Sicily.

The Roman galley was an oared fighting ship. It was best used in calm waters, but nevertheless was sailed over long distances. Evidence of the design of these boats is primary found on coins and sculptures.
