RecordFashion plate, from La Mode Illustreépublished in Paris
Fashion plate, from La Mode IllustreéThis hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1872, the plate illustrates an evening dress and a day dress. It is signed, 'D' and 'Anaïs Toudouze'. The women are standing on a balcony, overlooking the water. The buildings in the background and the gondolas on the water suggest the setting might be Venice. Adèle Anaïs Toudouze was the second daughter of Alexandre-Marie Colin (1798-1875), a painter and lithographer. Along with her sisters, Héloïse and Laure, she was responsible for some of the most charming fashion plates of the mid-nineteenth century.
