This is one of three castings of angels for the side of the casket of the Scottish National War Memorial at Edinburgh Castle. The angels were modelled by Alice Meridith Williams and made by Hadden Ironworks in Edinburgh around 1925.

About 100,000 Scots people died in the Great War of 1914-1918. Such loss of life meant that virtually every family was touched. Even before the Armistice, discussions were underway to find a fitting and appropriate monument to commemorate the dead.
