Sculptured stoneThis block of roughly square sandstone, with a boar carved in relief, was found at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 140 and 180 AD. Roman legionary emblem of a boar cut in a block of sandstone, from Newstead Roman legions often had animal emblems. The boar was the emblem of the 20th Roman legion.
