Proclamation of marriage banns

A proclamation of marriage banns, generally made in church on three successive Sundays, gives notice of an intended marriage. This example was issued by the Parish Church in the Canongate in Edinburgh in 1836 and refers to John McKenzie and Jane Ronalds.
The proclamation is signed by the minister, William Nisbet, the elder, William Christie and the session clerk, William Urquhart.
The registration of births, marriages and deaths did not become compulsory until 1855. Thereafter, local authorities, rather than the churches, recorded them so as to monitor population change.
