Pot

This pot was found in a cist grave, in or under a cairn, at Craigbirnoch at New Luce in Wigtownshire. It had probably contained an offering of food or drink, and dates from sometime between 2200 and 1650 BC.

The pot is decorated over its exterior with bands of diagonal and triangular impressions. It is damaged and partly restored.

From around 2500 BC, individual burial, usually in a cist - a rectangular stone box-shaped grave - became popular over much of Scotland. In most cases, the only item to be buried with the dead was a pot containing an offering of food or drink.
