Trophy (detail), of Scottish Volunteer Ambulance
Add to album

This is a detail of a Scottish Volunteer Ambulance silver trophy. The trophy was awarded annually to the winners of the Scottish Volunteer Ambulance competition between 1904 and 1907.

The Royal Arms of Scotland are the principal decoration on the plinth, which is also decorated with Scottish regimental badges. In the foreground, the Rod of Aesculapius - the Greek God of healing - decorates the base.

Volunteer military ambulance units were formed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, recruited from medical students at the universities. Stretcher-bearer companies were also organised.
