Add to album

This five pounds banknote was issued by the Tweed Bank on 1 January 1840. The note was printed using steel plates engraved by Perkins, Bacon & Petch of London.

The note is engraved with a view of the town of Berwick and the bridge over the River Tweed. Dated and numbered by hand, the note is signed, 'T. Langhorn' & 'Geo K Nicholson'.

Founded in Berwick-on-Tweed in 1813, most of the Tweed Bank's notes were circulated in the Scottish county of Berwickshire. Branches may have existed in Kelso and Selkirk. The bank failed in 1841.
