Add to album

This 17th-century sporting rifle belonged to Ludovic Grant (1650?-1716), 8th Laird of Freuchie and 1st of Grant. It is part of a collection of weapons from the family armoury of the Lairds of Grant, later Earls of Seafield, who were based in Speyside.

The rifle has a snaphance lock mechanism which uses a flint to spark the gunpowder. The barrel bears the date, 1667, and the initials 'IS'. Although the lock is dated 1671, it is actually a type of around 1630. It is signed 'IT'.

The 'IT' on the lock may be James Thomson or James Thorton, both of Dundee, or James Tweedie of Canongate.
