Pot and lid

This ceramic pot with lid in a knotted openwork string bag is one of eight found slung on a long stick. It is among a number of grave goods placed in the rich burial of a woman and child at Qurneh in Egypt, sometime in the 17th Dynasty. The woman may have been a queen.

The pot, here pictured from above, preserves some remains of the open weave net bag which surrounded it. Remains of the bag can also be seen on the lid.

Wealthy people in ancient Egypt were buried with a range of objects to help them in the Afterlife. These included religious amulets, food and drink, furniture, games, clothes, jewels, and even miniature servants to do the work.
