Model, of destroyer HMS Opportune
Add to album

This wooden model represents the destroyer 'HMS Opportune', built in 1916 by W Doxford & Sons Ltd of Sunderland. The model was built to a scale of 1:64 by Engineer Lt Cdr Edward C Malet RN, Surrey.

'HMS Opportune' was armed with three 4-inch quick-firing guns, one 2-pounder and four 21-inch torpedo tubes. She had a crew of 96 officers and men.

With the outbreak of the First World War, an emergency program of destroyer building was established, beginning with the 'M' class, of which this vessel was one. The destroyers had to be fast as they were intended to guard the fleet.
