Model coffinThis ancient Egyptian wooden model coffin was used in the New Kingdom, 18th Dynasty (around 1539 to 1295 BC). The lid of the model coffin has been carved in the shape of a mummy with hands clenched on the chest. The face has been painted yellow and the body red. Model coffins were sometimes included among burial goods. They generally contain shabtis, models of servants buried with an ancient Egyptian in order to perform menial tasks in the Afterlife on behalf of the deceased.
