This large, bronze pin is one of several found during excavations at the site of Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It may have been used to fasten clothing. The pin dates from sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The pin has a large, flat circular head and a blunt end.

Roman pins were used primarily for the dress and hair. They occur in a range of materials and styles, with some of the heads highly decorative. At Newstead, many of the pins were found at the baths.
