These four bronze saddle mounts were found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. They would have been used during ceremonial occasions sometime between 80 and 180 AD.

The mounts are convex, with small holes around the edges.

Excavations at Newstead have revealed much about the layout and daily life in Roman camps in Scotland. Some of the finds were for tournaments or ceremonies rather than fighting, useful for impressing visitors and building morale.
