New Zealand War medal (obverse)

This is the obverse of a Wairoa Volunteers medal awarded to J.H. Erskine in 1869 for service in the Maori Wars in New Zealand.

The obverse has a crowned bust of Queen Victoria.

The Maori Wars lasted from 1844 to 1872. During the early 1860s, the colonial forces were led by a Scot, General Sir Duncan Cameron.
