made in Glasgow
This detail shows the mark of the Glasgow potters, J. and M.P. Bell and Company. It is on the base of a transfer-printed earthenware soup plate, made between 1842 and 1880 and exported to South East Asia.
There were many variations in Bell's marks. This one consists of a trefoil with the pattern name 'HAWKING' in the centre and the company initials 'J. & M.P.B. & Co.' underneath.
Some of Bell's exported plates can still be found in the bazaars and markets of South East Asia.
