Knitting

These garments are an example of the distinctive Sanquhar knitting style, of which there are several individual patterns.

This strip knitted in black and white wool in the geometric style known as Sanquhar knitting demonstrates a number of Sanquhar patterns, including: Drum, Shepherd's Plaid, Duke, Prince of Wales and Rose.

This distinctive two-coloured patterned knitting takes its name from the small village of Sanquhar in Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway. The upland valley of the river Nith was an ideal situation for the development of wool-based industries. There was good sheep country, soft water for processing wool and established roads following the river valleys to markets in central Scotland.
