Hat, Gloves and Scarf

These garments are an example of the distinctive Sanquhar knitting style, of which there are several individual patterns.

This hat, scarf and gloves are knitted in black and white wool in the geometric style known as Sanquhar knitting.

The distinctive two-coloured patterned knitting which is widely known as Sanquhar knitting takes its name from the small village of Sanquhar in Upper Nithsdale, Dumfries and Galloway. The knitting patterns were passed on through generations of Sanquhar families by word of mouth and were not published until the 1960s when the Scottish Women's Rural Institute decided to put them to print.
