Jade figure of a hound

The top view of this jade hound shows a prominent spine. This is typical of jade carvings of recumbent hounds. When the dog is viewed from one side, the contour follows the spine and goes up and down, adding rhythms to the piece.

The dating of Chinese jade objects is difficult. Jade recumbent hounds were carved in the Tang and Song periods. But the subject was later revived and was carved in a simplified form.
