A scaffie was a traditional Scottish fishing boat. Used for herring, it was introduced in the mid 19th century into the Moray Firth. This wooden model, built to a scale of 1:24, represents a typical scaffie from around 1885.
The scaffie's hull is clinker-built i.e. the hull is constructed of overlapping planks.
Scaffies were also known as skaffa or scaith. Boats of this type were lightly built with oak frames and larch planking. Their light construction enabled them to be run up the beach when not in use. Later models were completely decked and carried tow masts. Their popularity declined during the 1880s when they were gradually superseded by Zulu-type boats.
