Snuff box, owned by Major General Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverneill

This is the base of a snuff box owned by Major General Sir Archibald Campbell of Inverneill. The box dates from around 1785. It has gold mounts and a mother-of-pearl base.

Campbell was the first Colonel of the 74th (Highland) Regiment, raised in 1787 for service in India. At this time, Campbell influence in Scotland had grown as a result of their consistent political and military support for the British state.
