This Scottish Volunteer Ambulance silver was awarded annually to the winners of the Scottish Volunteer Ambulance competition between 1904 and 1907.
The top of the trophy is formed by a representation of the human heart complete with four ventricles. The main panel on the mount below shows medical treatment being given to a wounded soldier of the South African War.
Volunteer military ambulance units were formed in Glasgow, Edinburgh and Aberdeen, recruited from medical students at the universities. Stretcher-bearer companies were also organised.
