Trade token (reverse), Halfpenny, of John Steele, Forfar, Angus
Add to album

This is the reverse of a copper halfpenny trade token of John Steele of Forfar in Angus. Dated 1797, the token was designed by James Wright Junior and manufactured by Kempson. The die-sinker was Willets.

The reverse depicts the distant view of a town from the water with the text, 'FORFAR/1797', underneath.

Forfar is the county town of Angus. The burgh was founded in the reign of David I, son of Malcolm Canmore. His castle is no longer standing but the site is marked by an octagonal turret.
