Necklace (reconstruction)

This is a reconstruction of a necklace of a type which might have been worn by Scotland's earliest people.

The necklace is made primarily of materials from the red deer: drilled teeth and beads of bone and antler, strung together on a thread made of sinew. The teeth and beads could have been pierced using a bow drill.

Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains. Although no necklaces exactly such as this one survive from Scotland, early people certainly had the raw materials and techniques to make them.
