Hammer (reconstruction)

This is a reconstruction of an antler hammer. Similar objects were used by early people in Scotland for a variety of tasks, including making stone tools. They provided a lighter force than stone hammers.

For much of Scotland's history, people have made extensive use of bone and antler for many objects used in daily life. The raw materials were easy to come by and fairly easy to work, producing light, strong, flexible and resilient objects. Many antler objects, like this one, made the most of the natural shape and properties of the raw material.

Modern attempts to duplicate the skills and objects of early people have led to increased understanding - and respect - for their methods. Such reconstructions also help archaeologists interpret the discovered remains.
