A swivel is a coupling device allowing free turning of the parts which are attached to it. This iron example with two iron rings attached to it was found during excavations at the site of the Roman fort at Newstead in Roxburghshire. It dates from between 80 and 180 AD.

Iron was widely used by the Romans for tools, weapons and fittings. Blacksmiths made a wide range of objects, using tools not that different from those in use today.
