Fashion plate, from La Mode Illustreé

This hand-coloured fashion plate is from La Mode Illustreé, a fashion magazine published in Paris. Dating from 1889, the plate illustrates fancy dress costumes for two women and a young girl. It is signed, 'Bonnard' and 'I. Desgrange'.

The woman on the left is carrying a tray of fresh lavender. Her dress and hat are also trimmed with sprigs of lavender.

Towards the end of the 19th century, interest in the fancy dress ball was revived. Magnificent functions were held by the dominant hostesses of the day and were attended by members of the aristocracy.
