Trade token (obverse), Penny, of Phoenix Iron Works, GlasgowThis is the obverse of a copper penny trade token of the Phoenix Iron Works in Glasgow. The token is dated 1813. The obverse depicts the warehouse and factory with the surrounding text, 'PHOENIX IRON-WORKS/GLASGOW'. The need for raw materials dictated where ironworks were established. Initially, the fuel used was charcoal, derived from wood. In the 18th century, coke, which burnt at a higher temperature and was made from coal, began to replace charcoal.
